New Year’s resolutions and good intentions aside, many people find that winter can put their fitness routine on ice, reducing workout motivation and frequency. Research has shown, though, that winter workouts can strengthen immunity and be powerful mood-boosters1 —so maintaining your motivation pays off.

Make exercising more challenging by adding variety to your routine. With online videos and technology, you can customize your workouts and find new sources of inspiration to see you through the season.

To get you started, here are some tips on how to change up your routine.

1. Vary your exercise routine.

Many people do exactly the same workout, with the same exercises performed in the same order. When your body becomes accustomed to what you ask of it, you may stop seeing results. Change the order of the exercises you perform, for example, or add some 30-second to one-minute challenging intervals to your cardio session.

2. Exercise at home.

Sometimes, motivation drops when you have to drive to a gym. Exercising at home can help. Find online videos for routines you like and invest in equipment that you can use in more than one way to continually challenge your body.

3. Work out smarter.

Use technology to help you stay inspired. Fitness trackers, apps, and equipment that includes technology can help. The new Max Intelligence platform, available with the Bowflex Max Trainer M6 and M8 cardio machines, uses artificial intelligence to analyze and track your workouts and automatically adjusts your fitness plan to help you make progress toward your goals. Using data from an initial fitness assessment and predictive analytics, Max learns your unique capabilities and adapts with a personalized fitness experience that includes dynamic coaching*, trainer-led videos*, fitness tracking, rewards, and more.

4. Enjoy outside exercises.

Taking your workout outside can help you burn more calories, build endurance, and fight off the winter blues, research has shown.2 Run or walk outside, instead of on the treadmill, or try a new outdoor sport like snowshoeing. Of course, common sense is key. Make sure to dress properly in layers and drink fluids to stay hydrated.

5. Warm up before exercising.

A proper dynamic warmup can help reduce the risk of injury. Perform a few simple warm-up moves like lunges, arm circles, skips, or pushups before you begin your workout.

6. Try a new indoor sport or fitness class.

Winter can be a great time to mix up your fitness routine with a new class or indoor sport for inspiration and a physical challenge.

7. Make small daily changes that add up.

See more results with small changes. Park farther from buildings or your office. Take the stairs whenever you can, and drink plenty of fluids during the day to stay hydrated.

Staying motivated now will help you be more active this spring and summer. Learn more about options for financing your home gym to stay healthy this winter on CareCredit’s Bowflex partner page.
