If you’ve noticed changes in your skin’s appearance and texture like dullness, dryness or fine lines despite being diligent about moisturizing, you may benefit from Skinvive® by Juvéderm®.
This FDA-approved microdroplet injectable is part of the Juvéderm family, but instead of adding volume to fill in wrinkles and contour like dermal fillers, Skinvive works by hydrating your skin from within. The added moisture smooths skin and gives it a healthy glow.1
What Is Skinvive?
Skinvive is a hydration injection that injects microdroplets of modified hyaluronic acid just beneath the skin’s surface.1
Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body naturally produces, which helps skin attract and retain moisture.1 It plays a crucial role in keeping your skin supple, smooth and hydrated. But as we age, levels of hyaluronic acid, along with collagen and elastin, gradually decrease. This reduction can lead to drier skin, a loss of volume, and changes in skin texture.
Skinvive addresses these issues by temporarily increasing moisture from beneath the skin for a smoother, radiant effect without adding the volume of traditional fillers.1
Who is a good candidate?
Skinvive is suitable for people over age 21. It’s for those looking for a brighter, more hydrated complexion with a subtle improvement of fine lines rather than a dramatic change in volume or facial contours.1
It’s suitable for all skin types, but Skinvive is not recommended for people with a history of severe allergies or anaphylaxis or known allergies to lidocaine or other ingredients in Skinvive.1
Skinvive is FDA-approved for use on the cheeks.1 As with other fillers, many providers use it off-label to treat other areas, including:
- Around the mouth to soften smile lines
- On the chin to improve bumpy, dimpled skin
- On the decolletage to smooth and hydrate
- On the neck to improve crepey skin
Skinvive vs. dermal fillers
Skinvive is not like other facial fillers; it works more like a skin booster.2 Although it’s an injectable cosmetic treatment with the key ingredient being hyaluronic acid, like many other fillers, its formulation, application and effects are different from most fillers.2
Here are some key differences between Skinvive and traditional fillers:2
- Skinvive has a more watery consistency and is injected in tiny quantities — or microdroplets — into many points to improve hydration and enhance skin quality, rather than altering facial features.
- Traditional fillers have a thicker, cohesive, gel-type consistency and are injected to add volume to fill in deep lines, such as wrinkles or nasolabial folds, or to augment features like the jaw, nose or lips.
How Much Does Skinvive Cost?
The national average cost* of Skinvive is $723, but pricing can range from $522 to $1,151 depending on factors such as location, your practitioner’s credentials and the number of syringes needed to achieve the desired result.3 Special promotions, such as bundled procedures, may also impact how much you’ll pay.

Does Health Insurance Cover Skinvive?
Whether insurance will cover Skinvive may depend on the reason for the treatment and your specific insurance plan. However, because Skinvive is an elective cosmetic procedure designed to enhance skin appearance rather than treat a medical condition, it is generally not covered by health insurance.
As a result, you may need to pay out of pocket. To avoid unexpected costs, it’s important to confirm pricing with your provider ahead of time and discuss any payment plans or financing options that may be available.
Skinvive Treatment Process: How It Works
Here’s what to expect on the day of your Skinvive treatment:4
- Consultation. Your practitioner will begin by discussing your skin concerns and desired results. They’ll review your medical history, assess your skin condition and determine whether Skinvive is a suitable option based on factors that may include hydration levels, texture and overall skin health.
- Preparation. You’ll be asked to wash your face thoroughly with soap and water. The treatment area will then be disinfected with alcohol or an antiseptic solution to minimize the possibility of infection. Although Skinvive contains lidocaine to help reduce discomfort, your provider may also use a topical numbing cream or apply ice to help further enhance your comfort during the procedure.
- Procedure. Using a fine-gauge needle, your practitioner will inject small amounts of Skinvive into the skin. The injections are typically spaced about 0.5 cm to 1 cm apart, depending on the treatment area. After injecting, they may gently massage the skin to ensure even distribution of the product and to promote a smooth, natural-looking finish.
Possible Side Effects
Skinvive is generally considered safe, but as with any injectable treatment, side effects are possible.
You may experience some mild redness, swelling, bruising or tiny bumps at the injection sites. This typically resolves in under a week.1
Though rare, serious complications are possible if Skinvive is accidentally injected into a blood vessel. If this happens, it could block blood flow and cause serious problems like skin damage or even a stroke.1
To reduce the possibility of complications, Skinvive should only be administered by a licensed doctor or other licensed healthcare professional.1
Skinvive Recovery Timing
Skinvive doesn’t require any downtime, but it's recommended to avoid applying makeup for at least 12 hours after your treatment and refrain from strenuous activity, sun exposure and drinking alcohol for 24 hours.5
Be sure to follow any other aftercare instructions you’re provided as well.
Results
Skinvive results can be seen almost immediately. It may take a few days for any initial redness or swelling to subside for optimal results.1
Skin smoothness lasts about six months after treatment and people who’ve gotten Skinvive report being very satisfied with how glowing, healthy and hydrated their skin looked during that time.1
Your provider may recommend follow-up treatments to help maintain your results.
