Chiropractic Treatment Costs

A chiropractor can use different treatments to help improve pain, but not all are covered by insurance. Understanding the average costs of chiropractic care can help you plan your care and get back to feeling like yourself.

When to See a Chiropractor

While chiropractors focus on aligning the spine to improve pain and function, the benefits extend well beyond treating neck pain and back pain. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose and treat problems with your musculoskeletal and nervous systems and can create a treatment plan that also includes complementary treatments to help get you feeling and moving better.

If you’re looking for non-invasive pain relief, here are common types of treatments that may be used when you visit a chiropractor:

  • Spinal alignment. A chiropractor can use various spinal adjustments and techniques to reduce strain on the neck and back, which can relieve pain and improve function. This can include manual spinal adjustment, spinal decompression or spinal mobilization.
  • Tissue and muscle therapy. Some common therapeutic techniques used to help with pain reduction, improve range of motion and increase circulation include massage therapy, the Graston Technique and cupping therapy.
  • Alternative/holistic therapies. These types of treatments, based upon both ancient and traditional therapies to help improve pain and well-being, include acupuncture, reflexology, aromatherapy and sometimes craniosacral therapy.
  • Specialized therapies and stimulation. Intended to penetrate the muscles and stimulate the nerves to improve blood flow and relieve pain, some common specialized options include dry needling, electrical stimulation, hydrotherapy and magnetic therapy.

Cost of a Chiropractic Visit

The national average cost* of a chiropractic consultation is $152, but the cost can range from $121 to $281. Depending on your insurance coverage, some or all of this may be paid out of pocket.1

Your first visit with a chiropractor is often more expensive than follow-up visits because it typically involves a detailed discussion about your health concerns and medical history and determining diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. The cost can vary depending on whether it's done in a clinic or a private practice, how comprehensive the evaluation is and whether the chiropractor does an initial treatment.1 The average cost* of a subsequent chiropractic exam is $76 but can range from $60 to $140 depending on whether additional tests or imaging are performed.1
