The eyes may be the “windows to the soul,” but the nose is central to the face. So being unhappy with the size, shape or symmetry of your nose can take a toll on your confidence.

Among cosmetic procedures for the face, rhinoplasties — or nose jobs — are the third most common procedure after eyelid surgery and face lifts.1 But a traditional rhinoplasty, including the cost, surgical procedure and recovery time, may not be the right fit for everyone. Instead, those interested in making modest adjustments to their nose may want to consider a liquid rhinoplasty.

What Is a Liquid Rhinoplasty?

Liquid rhinoplasty is a non-invasive procedure to adjust the size, shape and symmetry of the nose with dermal filler. In contrast to a traditional rhinoplasty, liquid rhinoplasty is a non-surgical procedure and requires little to no recovery time. However, because the procedure relies on dermal fillers, the results are also not permanent.2

Liquid rhinoplasty is ideal for someone looking for modest changes to the shape, size or symmetry of the nose. Candidates for a liquid rhinoplasty are those looking to:3

  • Add volume to the nasal bridge
  • Balance asymmetry in the nose
  • Increase the size of the nose
  • Lift a drooping nasal tip
  • Smooth bumps along the nose

Those looking to resolve extreme crookedness, address breathing problems or remove cartilage or bone may find traditional surgical rhinoplasty a better fit.3

Liquid rhinoplasty vs. surgical rhinoplasty

There are many factors to consider when deciding between a liquid rhinoplasty and a traditional, surgical rhinoplasty.

Type Benefits
Liquid rhinoplasty
  • Able to make minor adjustments4
  • Fast results2
  • In-office procedure3
  • Minimal downtime2
  • Modest, natural results4
  • No scarring2
  • Non-surgical4
Traditional rhinoplasty
  • Able to treat a range of aesthetic and breathing issues3
  • May be covered by insurance when deemed medically necessary5
  • Permanent results2

Scheduling a consultation with a rhinoplasty provider can help you determine the best treatment to meet your needs.

Does Health Insurance Cover Liquid Rhinoplasty?

In some cases, a rhinoplasty may be deemed medically necessary to correct a cleft palate, fix an airway obstruction or remedy an issue due to disease or injury to the nose. In these cases, your health insurance policy may cover some or part of the cost. However, these are normally more extreme situations that require a traditional rhinoplasty instead of a liquid rhinoplasty. A liquid rhinoplasty is usually considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by most insurance policies.5

How Liquid Rhinoplasty Works

A liquid rhinoplasty is a non-surgical, in-office procedure that takes less than an hour to complete. Here’s what to expect:

Preparation

During a consultation, your aesthetic goals will be reviewed along with your medical history and an evaluation of your nose. The provider will discuss the different types and amounts of fillers needed to achieve your desired end results. Depending on the facility, you may be able to have the treatment performed right then or may need to schedule to come back at a later date.4

Procedure

In preparation for the procedure, the nose and surrounding area will be cleansed and disinfected. The nose will be marked based on where the filler needs to be injected. If desired, a numbing gel can be applied to the nose first. Then, the filler will be injected into the nose and surrounding areas.4

After each injection, the area will be massaged to help the filler disperse into a more natural look. Once the desired result has been achieved, the nose will be cleaned again to remove any residual filler.4 The procedure usually takes 15 to 45 minutes to complete.3

Recovery

In most cases, there is no downtime for a liquid rhinoplasty, and patients are able to resume normal activities immediately. Mild swelling or tenderness is common and can often be treated with ice and over-the-counter pain medication. Complications of a liquid rhinoplasty are rare but include filler migration, tissue necrosis or allergic reaction.4

Liquid Rhinoplasty Results: What to Expect

The results from a liquid rhinoplasty are immediate; however, it may take a few days up to a few weeks for the filler to settle and the final results to be revealed.4 Since a liquid rhinoplasty relies on dermal fillers instead of surgery, the results are not permanent.2

While the longevity can vary based on the type of filler used and an individual’s own metabolism, the average results last six to 18 months, with some lasting as long as 18 months. Those looking to maintain their results should schedule regular maintenance appointments or may wish to consider a surgical rhinoplasty.2

Is a Liquid Rhinoplasty Right for You?

When deciding whether a liquid rhinoplasty or traditional surgical rhinoplasty is your best treatment option, there are a number of factors to consider. Prospective patients will want to weigh the type and severity of the desired changes, a surgical versus a non-surgical solution, the recovery time and whether or not the results are permanent.

Discussing your aesthetic goals with a qualified professional can help ensure an ideal match between the end results and treatment options available.
