Does Health Insurance Cover Liquid Rhinoplasty?

In some cases, a rhinoplasty may be deemed medically necessary to correct a cleft palate, fix an airway obstruction or remedy an issue due to disease or injury to the nose. In these cases, your health insurance policy may cover some or part of the cost. However, these are normally more extreme situations that require a traditional rhinoplasty instead of a liquid rhinoplasty. A liquid rhinoplasty is usually considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by most insurance policies.⁵

How Liquid Rhinoplasty Works 

A liquid rhinoplasty is a non-surgical, in-office procedure that takes less than an hour to complete. Here’s what to expect:

Preparation

During a consultation, your aesthetic goals will be reviewed along with your medical history and an evaluation of your nose. The provider will discuss the different types and amounts of fillers needed to achieve your desired end results. Depending on the facility, you may be able to have the treatment performed right then or may need to schedule to come back at a later date.⁴

Procedure

In preparation for the procedure, the nose and surrounding area will be cleansed and disinfected. The nose will be marked based on where the filler needs to be injected. If desired, a numbing gel can be applied to the nose first. Then, the filler will be injected into the nose and surrounding areas.⁴

After each injection, the area will be massaged to help the filler disperse into a more natural look. Once the desired result has been achieved, the nose will be cleaned again to remove any residual filler.⁴ The procedure usually takes 15 to 45 minutes to complete.³

Recovery

In most cases, there is no downtime for a liquid rhinoplasty, and patients are able to resume normal activities immediately. Mild swelling or tenderness is common and can often be treated with ice and over-the-counter pain medication. Complications of a liquid rhinoplasty are rare but include filler migration, tissue necrosis or allergic reaction.⁴

Liquid Rhinoplasty Results: What to Expect

The results from a liquid rhinoplasty are immediate; however, it may take a few days up to a few weeks for the filler to settle and the final results to be revealed.⁴ Since a liquid rhinoplasty relies on dermal fillers instead of surgery, the results are not permanent.²

While the longevity can vary based on the type of filler used and an individual’s own metabolism, the average results last six to 18 months, with some lasting as long as 18 months.
