What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure in which body fat is removed with a small device called a cannula and some form of suction. There are different types of liposuction, such as laser-assisted liposuction, power-assisted liposuction and ultrasound-assisted liposuction, but they all remove fat in unwanted areas.

What Areas of the Body Can Liposuction Treat?

Though many areas of the body can receive liposuction, commonly treated areas include:

  • The abdomen
  • “Love handles"
  • Flanks
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Neck

What Makes Someone a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

A good candidate for liposuction needs to have enough fat and skin that is not overly stretched. However, advances in body contouring can tighten the skin, expanding the pool of candidates for liposuction.

Liposuction is Not a Weight Loss Method

In general, liposuction is not an effective weight loss approach. However, it can be used for breast reduction if there's a large enough fat component to the size of the breast.

How to Find a Reputable Liposuction Surgeon

Candidates for liposuction should make sure their surgeon and clinic are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgery. They should also assess the surgeons' training levels, and types of frequently performed procedures before making a decision.

What To Expect at A Liposuction Consultation

  • At your initial consultation you'll speak with a coordinator
  • You'll meet with your doctor, who will take a complete health history
  • The doctor will also assess whether you are a good candidate for liposuction
  • This team will follow you throughout your treatment process

Not Every Person is a Good Candidate for Liposuction

A good doctor will take a complete health history and be honest with patients who are not good candidates for liposuction (often due to underlying medical issues).

What Risks are Associated with Liposuction?

Contour abnormalities are very common. These are slight irregularities in contour that will either self-correct or can be corrected in-office after healing. Contour deformities, where there is a marked scooping or fullness, are not ideal and can't be easily corrected. The human body's response to liposuction can be unpredictable. A good doctor will do something to improve any irregularity.

How Safe is Liposuction?

The American Society of Plastic Surgery sets guidelines for the volume of fat that can safely be removed. However, some patients may need to stay overnight in a care facility.

Does Liposuction Require General Anesthesia?

Small areas of liposuction can be done in office, under local anesthesia (which also keeps costs lower). Larger areas, or multiple areas, may require general anesthesia.

Preparing for Liposuction, Physically and Mentally

  • Do not diet
  • Avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, aspirin, etc. that can cause bruising
  • Review medications that slow healing, and temporarily pause (if doctor orders)
  • Eat well
  • Sleep well
  • Review the postoperative process with your doctor
  • Adjust your mental state; there's no shame in pausing surgery if you're not feeling ready
  • Use the New Look Now app to see what your body will look like after surgery
  • Review before/after photos of other patients

What Can Patients Expect Postoperatively?

  • Some bruising, swelling and a little bit of pain
  • Patients may be prescribed special garments to help the skin contract
  • Patients should take it easy for three to four days after treatment, with light activity
  • Patients should avoid exercise for four to six weeks

How Long Will it Take to See Results?

The final result can take between several months and a year as the tissue contracts.

What is the Average Cost of Liposuction?

Cost depends upon the number of areas a patient has been treated, but on average, starts at about $2,000, per area.
