Belly fat. Spare tire. Muffin top. Love handles. There are many ways to describe the extra weight that’s carried around the abdomen, waist and back. While diet, exercise, sleep and stress reduction can all help play a role in reducing fat in the midsection, none of them can target belly fat specifically.1

Lipo 360 is a procedure to remove stubborn pockets of fat in this problem area, resulting in a sculpted and balanced figure.2 Keep reading to learn more about Lipo 360, including how it works, how much it costs and other important information on the procedure.

What Is Lipo 360?

Lipo 360, or circumferential liposuction, is an outpatient surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat from the entire midsection, including the upper and lower abdomen, obliques, flanks and back. Lipo 360 is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss solution.3

Typical candidates for Lipo 360 have stubborn excess fat in the midsection. Individuals should be in overall good health, at or near their target weight and have good skin elasticity in the midsection.4

Benefits

Lipo 360 can offer a range of benefits that go beyond just fat removal to enhance the appearance of the midsection, improve physical comfort, and boost personal confidence.2

Other key benefits include:

  • A more balanced and proportionate figure
  • Enhanced body contours and silhouette
  • Improved waistline definition
  • A smoother, more sculpted overall appearance

Lipo 360 vs. traditional liposuction

Lipo 360 uses the same surgical procedure as traditional liposuction to remove fat from the body. However, liposuction traditionally treats only one area at a time, whereas Lipo 360 combines treatments to address the torso from 360 degrees during the same procedure.3

While Lipo 360 is designed to treat the midsection, traditional liposuction can target a wider variety of areas, including the thighs, arms, buttocks or chin.2

How Much Does Lipo 360 Cost?

The national average cost* of a Lipo 360 treatment in the U.S. is $8,051, but prices can range from $6,380 to $14,660.5

Some of the factors that impact the final cost include:6

  • Anesthesia fees
  • Pre-exams and follow-up visits
  • Geographic location
  • Area of the body treated7
  • How much fat is removed7

Does insurance cover Lipo 360?

Lipo 360 is usually not covered by health insurance when performed as a cosmetic procedure.8 However, many doctors and cosmetic surgeons offer payment plans or accept the CareCredit credit card, which may be a convenient way to pay for Lipo 360 over time.*

Now, if the Lipo 360 is deemed medically necessary, it may be covered by insurance. Abdominal fat can be more than just a cosmetic concern — it’s linked to a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes and even cancer.1

If Lipo 360 is recommended for health reasons, it’s important to understand what your policy covers and what medical documentation might be required.8

Where Can Lipo 360 Be Used?

Lipo 360 is designed to comprehensively contour the entire midsection, including the abdomen (upper and lower), back (mid and lower), and sides to create a more sculpted and balanced appearance.³ This can involve treating a combination of the following areas:3

  • Abdomen (upper and lower)
  • Back (mid and lower)
  • Flanks
  • Love handles
  • Obliques

Additional areas that may also be treated for enhanced contouring include:9

  • Bra roll
  • Hip roll
  • Mons pubis
  • Presacral triangle
  • Waistline

Can Lipo 360 be combined with other procedures?

Some people may choose to combine Lipo 360 with other body contouring procedures, such as:3

Combining surgeries offers the convenience of a single recovery period and helps ensure your overall results are balanced.

How Lipo 360 Works

Before deciding if this procedure is right for you, learn more about the Lipo 360 consultation process, procedure, recovery, potential side effects and results.

Consultation

If you’re considering Lipo 360, the first step is to set up an initial consultation with a qualified provider who can discuss your concerns and goals, explain the Lipo 360 procedure, review your health history and suggest additional treatments or procedure options to consider.4

Procedure

Lipo 360 is usually performed under local anesthesia, so most patients will be numb but awake.4 However, some providers may also offer general anesthesia.3 The procedure can take from one to three hours, depending on the extent of the fat removal and any complementary procedures being performed.4

During the procedure, small incisions are made in the treatment areas and a numbing solution — typically containing lidocaine, sodium bicarbonate and epinephrine in saline — is injected. This helps numb the area, reduce bleeding and bruising and make fat removal easier.9

Next, a thin tube is inserted into the treatment areas to extract the fat cells. If you are having a BBL or fat transfer breast augmentation at the same time, the removed fat cells will be sterilized and readied for reinsertion. Then, the incisions will be closed.9

Recovery tips and timing

After the Lipo 360 procedure, you will be wrapped in a compression garment to reduce swelling and help with the healing process.9 You may also be given pain medication to deal with any discomfort. Bruising, swelling and soreness are normal after Lipo 360.3 Many patients can resume most of their normal daily activities within a few days of the procedure.9

It is important to follow all postoperative care instructions from your surgeon, attend follow-up appointments and reach out for support if you experience any bleeding, severe pain or signs of infection.9

Lipo 360 Results

Following a Lipo 360 procedure, swelling can last from a few weeks to a few months. While you may notice some improvements in the midsection immediately following the procedure, final results can take six to 12 months to appear.3

Since the Lipo 360 procedure physically removes fat cells, results can be permanent for patients who maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, excessive weight gain can cause remaining fat cells in the midsection to expand.3

What are the potential complications of Lipo 360?

Common side effects from Lipo 360 include bruising, swelling and soreness. However, other, more serious complications are possible, including:10

  • Asymmetry (uneven fat removal)
  • Bleeding and hematoma
  • Fat globules enter the bloodstream (embolism)
  • Fluid build-up under the skin (seroma)
  • Infection
  • Nerve damage
  • Reaction to anesthesia

As with any cosmetic surgery, it’s important to consult with a highly experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. Be sure to ask about their training, experience and adherence to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery safety protocols.
