What does it take to care for a pet financially and emotionally? As pet ownership and associated costs evolve, so does the need for veterinary teams to understand and adapt. Communication about cost in veterinary medicine isn’t just about numbers — it’s about empathy, support and offering practical advice.

That’s where the latest findings from Synchrony’s 2025 Pet Lifetime of Care Study come in. Building on the 2022 study, this update includes findings from dog, cat, small companion and mixed-pet households. The result? A richer picture of pet owners' emotional perspectives and how they plan and manage the financial responsibilities of caring for their pets over a lifetime.

Latest Pet Lifetime of Care Study Reveals a Cost Disconnect

Back in 2022, the first Pet Lifetime of Care Study revealed insights into not only pet owners’ attitudes toward costs but also how they manage those expenses throughout their pet’s life. It showed a disconnect between expected and actual costs and may demonstrate the importance of better communication between veterinary teams and clients when it comes to costs and planning.

The 2025 study takes this further by broadening the scope. Now, small companion animals like rabbits and hamsters and families caring for multiple pets are part of the conversation. This expansion helps to give a more comprehensive view of the pet ownership experience.

What stands out in the data? Costs are rising and financial worries are increasing. At the same time, pet owners show a strong willingness to invest in their pets’ health and happiness, regardless of their financial situation.

For veterinarians and their teams, understanding these realities may be essential for supporting pet families but also for understanding the impact of financial stress on clients visits and revenue.

The Reality of Pet Ownership Costs: A Closer Look

The 2025 study makes it clear: Pet owners face growing costs yet remain deeply committed. Despite worrying about unexpected expenses, they’re finding ways to pay for the care of their beloved pets.1

Dog dollars

Caring for a dog over its lifetime now costs between $22,125 and $60,602, up 11.65% from 2022. Yet dog owners’ expectations fall short, estimating about $8,200 in total costs. While more than two-thirds of dog owners surveyed report unexpected bills over $250, they are the least likely among pet groups to seek out financing options or payment plans.1

Cat costs

Cat owners are investing more in their pets’ lifetime care, with expenses ranging from $20,073 to $47,106. Average spending has increased 20% since 2022, reflecting both evolving veterinary practices and a greater emphasis on pet health. Nearly 1 in 10 cat owners report they adjusted other expenses, such as housing or car payments, to pay care costs, highlighting the dedication many have to their pets.1

Pocket pet prices

Small companion animals like rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets may be “pocket-size,” but the cost of their care can be large. Over about six years, owners can expect to spend between $7,600 to $14,938. To manage these costs, 25% of small companion animal owners surveyed use health and pet care credit cards, and are 36% more likely than other pet owners to borrow money from friends or family.1

Multi-pet money

Households caring for multiple pets often manage a wide range of expenses, with lifetime costs ranging from $34,278 to $85,703. About 3 in 4 owners surveyed express some concerns about costs over $250. This group also tends to make use of financial resources like credit cards or financing.1

Relationship revenue

Age-old bonds remain strong — approximately three-quarters of all pet owners consider their pets family members, best friends or children.1 This deep connection drives continued commitment to veterinary care, even when budgets are tight.

Preparing for a Lifetime of Care: Financing Options

More surveyed pet owners reported feeling better prepared in 2025 compared to 2022; however, unexpected expenses, particularly veterinary costs, remain a concern.1 Veterinarians are encouraged to communicate openly and transparently with pet owners, presenting a spectrum of care options. Collaborative conversations about costs, financing and pet insurance can help ensure pets receive the recommended care and help ease cost concerns.
